Science fiction has long been bringing about changes in our technology. Authors are known for creating controversy. Many of the technological advances based upon a science fiction novel have been controversial in their inception.

Space travel was dreamed of by stargazers throughout the ages. From Copernicus to Gene Roddenberry, people have dreamed of worlds further in space than our own. However much people wished to know, when it became possible, the people fought against it.

Religious sects used their powers to defame space travel just as environmentalists have been fighting water-fuelled cars. The abundance of the resource does not matter to them. They will still claim that if we use the water, just as we have been coal, wood and petrol, we will use it all up and our grandchildren will live in a desolate world.

This claim is not possible since the world is 70% water and it replenishes daily. The water that goes through the engines dissipates into the air and becomes rain again. The water that goes through the engine then becomes drinking water, ocean water and fuel again.

The controversy over the water use has been long fought. Since the inception of the water driven electricity power plants people have been fighting the use of water. The claim is that the water is being polluted.

It is true that a percentage of the water has been found to have pollutants in it after it is used as a fuel. However, there are treatment plants along the rivers to clean any pollutants found in the power plant water. This does not clean the water completely.

To ensure that the people and animal life of the world do not die away steps have been taken throughout the time when water first became fuel. For those who are fighting against the use of water-fuelled cars, this is the main fear. The government has taken precautions to not allow it, therefore it could be possible.

Another controversy derived from the idea of using water to fuel cars is the controversy created by the oil companies. Oil companies fear becoming obsolete if the water-fuelled cars can replace them. If there is a way to run a car on water, then there is a way to run home electricity on water and other things that require oil.

This controversy is a mostly hidden one that mainly exists covertly or in congress. There are lobbyists whose main source of employment is the blocking of patents and laws allowing the use of water as a main energy source. So far the lobbyists have been able to keep the water fuel referendums under their control.

This control is slowly being taken away as Japanese inventors have found a way to use water as a fuel for vehicles. As a country, Japan has been able to find ways to advance technology that other countries have only dreamed of. The first truly water-fuelled vehicle is being invented.

The patent for this vehicle is still under scrutiny and has yet to be given to the Japanese company requesting it. The controversy keeping this water-fuelled vehicle under wraps will not last long. Once the company has the patent, this patent will be publicly seen and the controversy will be over.

Saving Our Environment

‘The Environment’ is a blanket term that includes two primary areas. The environment includes everything around us that is living or non-living. The first of the two areas of the environment is nature as it exists without human interference – animals, plants, microorganisms, even the atmosphere and soil.

The second area that forms a part of the environment is all that does not come from humans. These include forces of nature and forms of energy – elements like air and water, energy like radiation, magnetism and electric force and the climate.

The natural environment as we know it contrasts heavily with the built environment, which is everything that’s completely influenced by our own activity. If you take one geographical region, it can only be considered as a natural environment, if the human impact on it is at its minimum.

Typical examples for existing natural environments are national forests and restricted large nature reserves. While the exact conditions required to be termed as a natural environment can vary from place to place, the term wilderness simply belongs to regions completely without human interference.

There are so few regions that can be considered to be natural environments now. Climate changes can account for some of this – climate changes caused by human influence. We have unseasonal rains and floods, melting icecaps and glaciers, and rising temperatures. Natural environmentalist groups play a major role in trying to keep natural environments intact. They try to push through laws and policies that will preserve the environment – keeping what there is safe, and trying to restore what was lost, as well as trying to create altogether new wilderness areas.

The common environmental preservation goals include several short-term and long-term aspirations. These include reducing pollution and cleaning up to achieve a zero pollution level, using non-recyclable materials to create energy, minimising non-renewable fuel consumption in society, developing alternative energy sources, conserving precious resources such as air, water and land, protecting pure ecosystems, preserving endangered species and maintaining the biodiversity that all life forms on Earth depend on.

With all the pollution that the earth has to face every day, there is every need to be concerned about our natural environment. Industrial plants, huge development projects – everything that is supposed to advance the human race sets the Earth back drastically. Global warming is just one of the many things we have to worry about.

We are the reason the natural environment is facing such danger. It is our responsibility to try and preserve the environment – not just stop damaging it, but fixing the damage that has been done. There is no time to lose – preservation can start right at home.

Nowadays, the two ideas are combining into a financial area called socially responsible investing. And both investors and mutual fund managers are figuring out that this new idea can be very rewarding, as well as do some good for the environment and society.

Bob Guthrie, an investment broker with A.G. Edwards in Burlington, Vt. says, “Socially responsible investing means you don’t have to compromise your own personal beliefs to make money on Wall Street – whatever those beliefs are.”

Even back in the early 1900′s the idea of choosing investments for social reasons occurred when church members formed together and refused to invest in tobacco or alcohol companies. Guthrie also says that the trend has continued with investors dodging corporations associated with the Vietnam War or companies investing in South Africa. And that trend continues today with investors selecting companies that are more environmentally friendly over those that are not.

So, yes, growth in this type of investing has ballooned during the past few years as more and more investors have moved social consciousness into the main street of investing. And the impact of this trend is being felt.

With help from stockholders, says Rob Kruger, vice president of portfolio management at Progressive Asset Management, business practices concerning the environment are beginning to change, While the issues may differ, he said companies are realizing they will suffer the consequences if they aren’t viewed as being socially responsible.

“As this investing community continues to grow, a lot of proposals are being put forward by investors at annual shareholder meetings,” Kruger said. “A whole variety of issues and activities is now being addressed.”

As part of its operation, Progressive Asset Management conducts research for socially responsible mutual funds. The firm screens companies for environmental problems or nuclear involvement — whatever issues their clients want investigated.

“As time flies, companies are becoming more and more cooperative with us,” Kruger said. “Many of them are now very eager to talk about these social and environmental issues.”

Guthrie agrees that business practices are changing and says American companies are aware of shareholders who are concerned with the environment.

“Make sure your hard-earned capital is not invested in companies with little concern for the environment,” he advises. “Keep these things in mind when you invest and corporations will, too.”

This scares me to death. The last time I heard about global warming is that the ice caps on the two poles are melting. Therefore sea level is also rising. Even if it wasn’t for the news I could feel that the environment is deeply effected by global warming due to the increase in temperature. This problem could be solved if we all start to recycle.

Well, recycling is one of the methods to help save the environment. Plastics other than CFCs are one of the most harmful materials on earth as it cannot be broken down. Therefore it will stay on earth forever; this kind of material is called non-biodegradable. With the growing usage if plastic, it is rather hard to curb the usage of plastic.

Sadly, since plastic are non-biodegradable they cannot broken down into simple substances therefore they are piling up in the landfills. This situation is devastating as the more plastics we produce the more land fillings there going to be. Plastics production and usage have grown drastically all over the world. However things could be change if all of us just take an effort to recycle it.

By controlling the usage of plastics we are actually doing a big part to help save the world. Recycling plastic is the best answer to the ever increasing plastic waste due to all the daily uses. Yet plastics are not only the material we can recycle but also things like milk bottles, soapboxes or even water bottles.

Recycling paper is common these days but not many have put it to good use. I am sure that many of us are guilty of just dumping use papers into the bin and not separating it or put in the recycling bin. So the next time you are about to throw away papers, think twice and just make a little trip further to the recycling bin. It could make all the difference in the world.

Recycling is not as troublesome as some of us may think it is. If you put recycling into good practice, recycling will be a breeze and will be apply in your every life. Little than you know it, you would be recycling every single day. The first step of adopting recycling is to have separate bins at home.
